FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Philadelphia – December 2025
On February 7 – 28, 2026, interdisciplinary artist Pam Korman opens her first solo exhibition, The Weight of Ghosts, at AUTOMAT Gallery in Crane Arts, 1400 North American Street. The artist reception is set for Second Thursday, February 12 from 6 – 9 pm.
The Weight of Ghosts explores family lineage, inheritance, and legacy through sculpture, installation, and experimental video. Having relocated numerous times throughout childhood, Korman is fascinated by how the influence of her family’s matriarchs and the items in their many homes became the framework for her identity and selfhood. She says, “A mother’s way of doing becomes a daughter’s way of being.” A testament to her personal experience with these themes, one of her experimental videos, Screen Tests, features her mother, her daughter, and her. The “moving portraits” provide an up-close example of the inherited gestures, expressions, mannerisms, and gaze passed down in her own matrilineage.
In her sculptures, Korman collects, constructs, alters, and (re)organizes common household items that have passed through the hands of women to become artifacts of identity. Some are heirlooms, heavy with the weight of legacy, that become emblems of the expectations left for successors. Others are well-worn tools of the home, haunted by evidence of touch. These utilitarian objects exemplify behaviors – learned through repeated exposure and imitation, rather than being taught – that leave subtle imprints on the following generation.
The Weight of Ghosts, provides an extensive introduction to Korman’s practice. Drawing from personal experiences, stories, and voices of her female ancestors, she finds threads of connection that echo through the past and into the future.
